Motivating Students
For some APPE students, enthusiasm can wane as they get closer to graduation. Here are some tips for keeping students motivated as APPE year finishes.
1. Show enthusiasm for your practice.
Enthusiasm is contagious!
2. Explain the reason behind assignments, projects, and tasks.
Understanding “why” gives more value and purpose to the work and effort.
3. Incorporate your student’s career goals into the rotational goals to emphasize the importance the learning experience will have on their future career.
Explaining the site’s goals to your student will demonstrate how their work contributes to the overall practice and patient population.
4. Customize assignments based on student interest.
Ask what disease states they would like review.
Ask about topics of interest for discussion.
5. Contact the Office of Experiential Education (OEE) if the student is struggling to stay motivated or with any other performance issues. pharmacyEE@mcw.edu
